City of Sorrows
Fernando Ortega

By the waters of Babylon
Still and deep
The sun rose at midnight
I was not asleep
I saw a man with a javelin
A carriage of steel
His eyes burned like sapphires
Wheels turning in wheels

I saw aluminum angels
Arrayed like a choir
Hailstones falling
Rivers of fire
By the waters of Babylon
I sank down in shame
Covered in ashes
I called out your name

Oh Jerusalem
City of thrones
The blood of your people
Still darkens the stones
City of sorrows
Spread on a hill
Bride of the prophets
They dream of you still

Kings in their armor
Swords in the sky
Storefronts of martyrs
Lined up to die
While in the streets of Jerusalem
Children in pain
Covered in ashes
I called out your name

Oh Jerusalem
City of thrones
The blood of your people
Still darkens the stones
City of sorrows
Spread on a hill
Bride of the prophets
They dream of you still

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted' for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have show kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

It's surprising what people will do when they have the real facts and the cold, hard statistics.

100% of the Gaza Strip will be evacuated and handed over to the Palestinians.
300 square miles in Samaria will be evacuated.
21 Israeli communities will be uprooted in the Gaza Strip.
4 Israeli communities will be uprooted in Samaria.
48 graves in the Gush Katif Cemetery, including six graves of area residents murdered by terrorists, will be uprooted.
9,000 is the approximate number of Israelis, including 1,700 Israeli families, currently living in the Gaza Strip and northern Samaria. All of them will be expelled as part of the withdrawal.
38 synagogues will be dismantled in the Gaza Strip.
5,000 school-age children will need to find new schools.
42 daycare centers will be closed in the Gaza Strip.
36 kindergartens will be closed in the Gaza Strip.
7 elementary schools, and 3 high schools will be closed in the Gaza Strip.
45,000 Israeli soldiers and policemen are expected to participate in the Gaza withdrawal.
$1.7 billion is the approximate cost to the Israeli government for the withdrawal initiative.
166 active Israeli farmers will be moved out of Gaza.
800 cows, comprising the second largest dairy farm in Israel, will be moved out of Gush Katif.
$120 million in flowers and produce exported annually from Gush Katif will be lost.
10,000 people employed in agriculture and related industries in Gush Katif, including 5,000 Palestinians, will need new employment.
60% of Israel's cherry tomato exports come from the Gaza Strip. Israel's withdrawal from Gaza will extinguish this economic resource.
3.5 million square meters (almost 1,000 acres) of greenhouses will be abandoned in Gaza.
70% of Israel's organic produce is currently produced in Gaza. This is another economic resource that will be lost.
60% of the herbs exported from Israel come from Gush Katif.
15% of Israel's agricultural exports originate in Gaza - exports that will be lost following Israel's withdrawal from Gaza.
$870 million is the approximate cost for Israel to facilitate the resettlement of former Samaria and Gaza residents elsewhere in the country.
$500 million is the amount of money Israel's security establishment will spend in order to relocate Israel Defense Forces bases outside the Gaza Strip and build new border crossing facilities.

So as you can see, this Roadmap really is a shining example of economic and social breakthrough! My friends, with peace like this, the world would be dead.

We must show the world that tearing up economy and making thousands homeless and jobless isn't the way to peace, but to dissension, hatred, grief, and yet more violence.

Please sign the petition that the Jerusalem Prayer Team has established, to let the world know you stand against this eviction and with the Jewish people.

My heart is so full, I cannot speak. I cannot give utterance to the words that burn in my soul and cause my heart to sob with grief. This strange burden for a people I have never met, and the love I bear for them, is all-consuming and drives my impassioned heart to cry forth in condemnation on the stagnant and foul treachery of what our modern world calls diplomacy.

Imagine being ordered to walk up to your neighbor's door and under the authority of armed force, tell them they have forty-eight hours to leave their schools, homes, and towns.

Imagine standing in the sun-baked doorway of your shattered home, dazed with shock and grief as your sobbing wife clings to you, her sobs drowning in the roar of bulldozers tearing the home of your heart down, a pitiful bargaining chip in the relentless bickering of disinterested nations.

For the first time since 1967, Israel has ordered that Jewish settlements in areas captured in the Middle East War be destroyed and their inhabitants relocated to other areas.

My heart and prayers are with the nation of Israel at this horrendous time! Oh for the power of an army to protect this small and shattered people! However, the Jews have God on their side. The Rock of Ages shall be their Rock, their home, and their protection. May God be with them, and vindicate them!

My friends, join with me and pray for the fathers and husbands whose wives and children groan in distress. Pray for Adi Levy and his wife.

The above picture of Levi and his wife speaks more eloquently than any news documentary or book. It is the face of Israel throught the years. It is the pain that knows no end, the pain that only digs deeper. Pray for the soldiers who weep as they are forced to force their own countrymen from the land of their fathers. Pray for the children! Pour your heart out to the Lord, and beg His mercy that this will cease!

I agree with Netanyahu's resignation. I see, as he does, that this is not peace or progress, but defeat and last mintute attempts at a false peace. My friends, diplomacy is the resolution of every issue without force being used; it does not involve evicting families from their homes. This is not diplomacy, but yet another police act of the world against the Jews.

To my Jewish brethren, I say, may God protect and sustain you.

Shalem alochem!

Yesterday, Sunday the 10th of July, 2005, our family suffered yet another loss from our treasured circle of loved ones.

Sweet little "Lady", our Cocker and Springer Spaniel mix, died peacefully in her sleep, at the golden age of nearly 15 years. Lady was loved by our entire family and will be mourned for many days.

Lady was a very special dog, for many special reasons. She was our first "real" pet that we had, and will always be first in our hearts. She was the dog that helped Tara get over her fear of dogs, being the very first dog that Tara would actually love and trust.

Lastly and most importantly of all, she was my father's best friend. She was the first dog that was completely "his little girl", and the first one that got "luvins" after Mom when he got home! She was his shadow for the rest of his life, and when he passed away she was heart-stricken. Daddy always considered Lady to be his "prized hunter" on his "vast estate", and took great pride at pretending he was a great Lord with his highly prized dog. He loved her very much, and she loved him above us all.

Lady was my last living link with my father, and this loss is very hard to take, even though I am thankful to God that she is no longer suffering from pain or old age.

Lady was a sweet, loving dog whose personality could be summed up in one word as loyal. She did have a mind of her own, which could be hard to deal with sometimes, but her love and her company got us through many hard times.

Yes, she was just a dog, but God loves all His creations, and I think Lady would have made Him smile. I thank God for giving her to us for this short time on this hard earth, for she made life a little less hard to bear. She will always be our very own "Lady", not only the First Lady of all our pets of our life, but the First Pet of our lives.

Thank you Lord, for our sweet little companion. Thank you for giving us pets, but especially, thank you for Lady!

Rest in peace, sweet Lady.
Walter Chalmers Smith

Immortal, invisible,
God only wise,
In light inaccessible
hid from our eyes,
Most blessèd, most glorious,
the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious,
Thy great Name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting,
and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting,
Thou rulest in might;
Thy justice, like mountains,
high soaring above
Thy clouds, which are fountains
of goodness and love.

To all, life Thou givest,
to both great and small;
In all life Thou livest,
the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish
as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish--
but naught changeth Thee.

Great Father of glory,
pure Father of light,
Thine angels adore Thee,
all veiling their sight;
All laud we would render;
O help us to see
'Tis only the splendor
of light hideth Thee!

Dear Lord and Father of All Mankind, we thank you for this beautiful and free land that you have so graciously blessed us with to enjoy unbounded freedoms, with the paramount freedom to worship your Holy and Magnificent Name.

We thank you for the brave men of this land, who through peril, the sword, wars, famine, and insurmountable odds, have carried freedom to the oppressed, freed the helpless, and blessed the world with the gift of freedom and equality that You have burned into our souls.

We thank you that through the years of our land, the ranks have continually filled with the flower of manhood and honor of this land to meet the call of duty and love of this great nation. Countless legions of our brave have marched away to fight, and with their last feeble breath paid the ultimate sacrifice for their loved ones, their neighbors, and those whom they had never seen or met.

We thank you for Your protection through the forces of America, and we thank You for their sacrifices and courage that have enabled us to live in this wonderful free land surrounded by luxury and security.

Lord Father, thank you especially for our fellow brothers in Christ who have marched into the fray carrying the witness of their testimony to Your grace, protection and matchless love. We thank you Lord for every one, and pray Your mighty hands of protection will be with those who are still struggling in the fields of horror and battle. We pray that You will strengthen them with Your mighty hands, carry them through their battles unscathed and safe. Protect them Lord, in your Holy Name.

Thank you for our freedoms Father, and Your mercy to our nation. Thank you for our brave men and women who still fight America's battles and keep us safe at home. Thank you Lord, for the Armed Forces of the United States of America.

Thank you Father, for America.

Amen.

Last night I could not sleep. The Texas spring nights are laced with thick and unrelenting humidity, although during the night it cools off enough to permit easy breaths of night odors and scents. I usually sleep with my window open in such weather, last night being no exception.

My guess is that the humidity is what was subverting my best attempts at a peaceful nights rest. The moonlight was bathing the yard with a lovely glow, and every petal and blade was scintillating with the light of a thousand years. Something drew me out of bed to that open window, I know not what. Leaning on that 85 year-old, wooden window sill, I let the murmuring breeze fill my senses with every sensation that makes Texas nights so divine.

It was sublime in every aspect. The oak trees leaves hung like a crisp hot curtain in the night, while moonlight played with the ground and danced among the rose bushes. The frogs and nightlife rose in a whispering chorus in the darkness. The humidity bathed my forehead with perspiration and soaked every object in its dense and invisible heaviness. The croaking of the frogs echoed eerily in the bank of stillness, sending their melody of satisfaction into every corner of the inky landscape.

I bethought myself of that luscious book on my bookshelf, Plantations of the Low Country, by William and Agnes Baldwin. Set in the lowlands of South Carolina, the grand plantations and manor houses snuggle deeply into thousand year groves of cypress and palmetto trees adorned with Spanish moss and lush creeper plants. Their old halls and rooms, laden with echoes of our heritage, bespeak of a time when air conditioning wasn't a factor. The tall broad windows with their ornate and inviting glass panels lured the lingering air into rooms where the master and lady tossed in tall beds, much like I toss now. The soft, soothing sounds echoed in their ears then, as they do now. Those lovely houses now sit empty in the night, hundreds of miles from here, with nothing but the silent echoes of the past whispering in symphony to the croaking frogs. How many times did a lonely maiden or restless youth stand at those windows, with the same fears and thoughts as I? Locked in the depths of the silent, thick swamp, and wrapped in ceaseless humidity, their thoughts that cried out to the stern trees and whispering nightbirds is forever held sacred in its arms.

The night breeze now fills my nostrils with the sweet scent of the pond lilies and moss, beckoning me deeper. I want to slip into the moonwrapped shimmer and glory of this night, away from the prison of this modern world. To wander in solitude in the night, to be at one with the smells and animals, is to be near to God. This solitude in the night is God's gift to man from the beginning of time. The presence of God in nature, deep in the inky night, lost in the world of a liquid expanse; this is peace.

I close my eyes, and pray to the Father. I am lost in time; time does not matter any longer. I am in South Carolina, a young planter's son who cannot sleep. The hanging moss drips humidity, and the frogs chirp in contented peace.

Let time fly on, let men strive and worry. When I am gone, and time is its relentless march, some exploring traveler will part a veritable mountain of vines and bushes to find this old house on this hill.

He will wander through the echoing, empty rooms, until he comes to mine. There, he will pause on the windowsill and look out, and perhaps, possibly, he will feel what I have felt. Perhaps he will feel what we have all felt, when we have looked out of a window at night into the lovely embrace of the moonlit night.

I turn away from my window, like the young maiden and young planter's son before me, and like them, I reluctantly return to bed.

When I fall asleep at last, it is in my spacious room with tall windows, in my bed with thick cotton sheets. The last thing I hear is the soft symphony in the night. The nightbirds softly cooing, and the wind softly whispering.

And the frogs, the frogs are gently croaking......
