Dependents of Liberalism
I ran across an interesting quote from Dr. Joseph Chambers about liberalism and the dependents it creates.
"The only way liberalism has survived this long in America is because of the 'wards of state' they have created. The vast crowds of voters that depend on more and more from these liberal politicians keep electing them. The slaves of the plantation owners were no more slaves than the millions of Americans that serve the liberal politicians of our day."
~Dr. Joseph Chambers
Very intriguing and sadly true.

Joe Chambers is a good guy. I've had him on the phone twice. He was very kind and helpful. I used to listen to him on shortwave. Now I get his newsleter. he is a good old time preacher.

That is distressingly accurate. :(
Reminds me of a quote in my favorite history book, describing the main difference between democractic and federal republican governments, "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy [taxing and spending], always followed by a dictatorship." (Alexander Tyler)

I'm glad you enjoy Dr. Chambers too, Jesse!
Thank you so much for the quote Sarah! That is very enlightening too. :)

I guess it depends on how you define liberalism...

I beg your pardon, but if America didn't have liberals, this country would not be as great as it is. It is the political theory of liberalism that allows change in government; if we only followed conservative theory, we'd probably still be stuck with slavery and no civil rights for women. There is a need for both conservative and liberal thought in our political system, for it is the lack of that balance that leads to extremes.

Willow, whether one agrees with what you said also depends on how they describe conservatism. To some people it means sticking with the old ways simply because that is always how things have been done, which is what you mentioned concerning slavery and and civil rights.
However, most conservatives would describe their course of thought as sticking to certain never-changing principles ordained by God. For instance, conservatives these days are known for being strong in their support of the Second Ammendment, anti-abortion laws, and defense of freedom for ourselves and other nations. Those are considered conservative and old-fashioned ideas because they stem from the ageless belief in and desire for life and liberty... the same beliefs which freed slaves and extended civil rights.
Liberty is always the same, but as a nation we grow in it. "Freedom is on the march!" to use Mom's favorite President George W. Bush quote. :)

Yes, Sarah, you are right. I apologise if I seemed harsh. I simply wanted to point out the fact that there is a need for both liberalism and conservativism in this country. We have never not had both in this country which is one of the reaonse why it is so great. If we followed only liberalism or conservativism, we would not be a great nation at all. Blaming one set of ideals for America's problems does nothing.

Very nicely done ladies! You both have very good points, and do such a nice job of agreeing in Christ, and being gracious. It's heartwarming. :-)

Thank you, Willow, for both explaining and understanding!
And you did not seem harsh, so nothing to apologize for. :)
